Musa > Lesson 9

Lesson 9: Crossing the Red Sea

“Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me.”

Surah ash-Shu'arah, verse 62

The Escape of Bani Isra’il

So they left during the night, according to the command of Allaah, and they made their way towards the Levant, and when Pharaoh heard about this he became enraged and gathered all his men to pursue them from all the various cities, saying "These are just a small group of people, and we are going to be ready for them!". And they all left their gardens and dwellings, which was by the Will of Allaah so that they would be destroyed, and they followed them at sunrise. And when they met and saw each other, Banu Isra'il became afraid as the sea was in front of them and there seemed to be no escape, and they began to lose hope but Musa remained firm as he knew Allaah was with him. With Musa were Harun and Yusha' bin Noon who was one of the scholars of Banu Isra'il and he became a prophet after Musa and Harun.

The Splitting of the Sea

So Allaah then commanded him to strike the sea with his staff, which split and both sides became like massive mountains and when Pharaoh's army came close, chasing Bani Isra'il, Allaah made the ocean to come back together, drowning Pharaoh and his army and saving Bani Isra'il when they had made it to the other side of the sea.

The people of Pharaoh also proclaimed that they believed in Allaah when they saw the punishment overtake them but it was also too late as their repentance is not worth anything if it only comes when they finally see the punishment, and they did not believe in any of signs that were sent to them, out of arrogance and stubbornness, to the point that if they were returned to life then they would have returned to their disbelief and their evil ways.

And Jibreel said, as has been established in authentic narrations, to the Messenger of Allaah ﷺ that on that day, he was putting the mud of the sea into Pharaoh's mouth, just in case that Allaah's Mercy may still reach him.

Pharaoh's body was then brought out of the sea as a sign so that Bani Isra'il could see for themselves that he had finally been destroyed as they had trouble believing that he was truly dead and that they were free from his tyranny.

And this day was the day of 'Ashura, which is why the Muslims fast on the day of 'Ashura as the Jews used to fast in celebration but the Prophet ﷺ said that we are more worthy of fasting on this day.

Key Lessons

Escape and Pursuit – Prophet Musa (Moses) led the Children of Israel out of Egypt at night as commanded by Allah, but Pharaoh and his army pursued them, leaving behind their wealth and homes.

Miracle at the Sea – Allah instructed Musa to strike the sea with his staff, causing it to part into massive walls of water, allowing the Israelites to pass safely. When Pharaoh and his army followed, the sea closed upon them, drowning them all.

Pharaoh’s Fate and Ashura – Pharaoh declared belief in Allah at the moment of his death, but it was too late. His body was preserved as a sign for future generations. The event is commemorated by fasting on the day of ‘Ashura, as practiced by Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.

  1. And We inspired Musa (Moses), saying: "Take away My slaves by night, verily, you will be pursued." Then Fir'aun (Pharaoh) sent callers to (all) the cities. (Saying): "Verily! These indeed are but a small band. "And verily, they have done what has enraged us; "But we are host all assembled, amply fore-warned." So, We expelled them from gardens and springs, Treasures, and every kind of honourable place. Thus [We turned them (Pharaoh's people) out] and We caused the Children of Israel to inherit them. So they pursued them at sunrise. And when the two hosts saw each other, the companions of Musa (Moses) said: "We are sure to be overtaken." [Musa (Moses)] said: "Nay, verily! With me is my Lord, He will guide me." Then We inspired Musa (Moses) (saying): "Strike the sea with your stick." And it parted, and each separate part (of that sea water) became like the huge, firm mass of a mountain. Then We brought near the others [Fir'aun's (Pharaoh) party] to that place. And We saved Musa (Moses) and all those with him. Then We drowned the others. Verily! In this is indeed a sign (or a proof), yet most of them are not believers. [Surah ash-Shu'arah, verse 52-67]
  2. And when Pharaoh was about to be drowned he desperately proclaimed, "I believe that La ilaha illa (Huwa): (none has the right to be worshipped but) He, in Whom the Children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims (those who submit to Allah's Will)." [Surah Yunus, verse 90] but this belief did not benefit him as it was far too late and it was said to him in response, "Now (you believe) while you refused to believe before and you were one of the Mufsidun (evil-doers, corrupts, etc.)?" [Surah Yunus, verse 91]
  3. So when they saw Our punishment, they said: "We believe in Allah Alone and reject (all) that we used to associate with Him as (His) partners. Then their Faith (in Islamic Monotheism) could not avail them when they saw Our punishment. (Like) this has been the way of Allah in dealing with His slaves. And there the disbelievers lost utterly (when Our Torment covered them). [Surah Ghafir, verse 84-85]
  4. So this day We shall deliver your (dead) body (out from the sea) that you may be a sign to those who come after you! And verily, many among mankind are heedless of Our Signs. [Surah Yunus, verse 92]
  5. Ibn 'Abbas (Allaah be pleased with both of them) reported that the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) arrived in Medina and found the Jews observing fast on the day of 'Ashura. The Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said to them: What is the (significance) of this day that you observe fast on it? They said: It is the day of great (significance) when Allaah delivered Moses and his people, and drowned the Pharaoh and his people, and Moses observed fast out of gratitude and we also observe it. Upon this the Messenger of Allaah (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) said: We have more right, and we have a closer connection with Moses than you have; so Allaah's Messenger (sallAllaahu alayhi wa sallam) observed fast (on the day of 'Ashura), and gave orders that it should be observed. [Sahih Muslim 2520]
