Lesson 5: Allah’s punishment upon the people of Nuh
(Disbelievers)
So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth. And We caused springs to gush forth from the earth.
Al-Qur’an 54:11
From the heavens & Earth
Allah sends his divine punishment upon the people of Nuh . In the face of the impending flood, the people of Nuh
sought to flee for safety but as the floodwater gushed forth from the earth, and poured from the heavens, the rain engulfed the land and submerged everything in its path.
In the face of the impending flood and decreed punishment, Prophet Nuh 's own son, upon the disbelief of his people, attempted to flee from the safety of the ark. Despite Nuh
's earnest pleadings and WARNINGS, his son chose to REJECT the message of truth and face the consequences of his disbelief.
Nuh ’s son decided to take REFUGE on a mountain instead of boarding the ship with his father and the believers. His father PLEADED with him to come aboard the ship and mentioned that nothing could save him except the mercy of Allah. His son, never imagining the waves would reach the levels of the mountains, came between them and he was among the drowned.
Tragically, among those who remained adamant in their rejection of Nuh 's message were his own wife and son, who chose to align themselves with the disbelievers rather than embrace the guidance of Allah.
Nuh called out to his lord that he promised to save his family and Allah’s promise is the truth so he asked how can his son be among the drowned. However Allah explained that Nuh
son is not of his family that he would save as he was not a believer.
As the floodwaters rose from the earth and torrents of rain fell from the sky and heavens, the flood became increasingly overwhelming, rising ENGULFING the land and SUBMERGING everything. This catastrophic flood served as a manifestation of Allah's wrath upon the disbelieving people, fulfilling the divine decree of punishment.
Inevitably, the disbelievers who had scorned Nuh and defied Allah's command were engulfed by the surging waters, meeting their end in the depths of the flood.
By Allah’s command the rain stopped and the water ceased to gush from the earth.
Following the devastating flood, the ark eventually came to rest upon Mount Judi, signalling the end of Allah's divine decree and the preservation of those who had heeded Nuh 's call to faith.
In the aftermath of this cataclysmic event, Prophet Nuh humbly sought forgiveness from Allah, acknowledging his own limitations and flaws while expressing gratitude for the mercy and guidance bestowed upon him and his followers. This act of repentance and submission underscored Nuh
's unwavering faith and devotion to Allah, even in the face of immense trials and tribulations.
- So We opened the gates of heaven with water pouring forth. And We caused springs to gush forth from the earth. So the water (of the heaven and the earth) met for a matter predestined. And We carried him on a ship made of planks and nails, Floating under Our Eyes: a reward for him who had been rejected! [Al-Qur’an 54:11-14]
- The son replied: "I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water." Nuh
(Noah) said: "This day there is no saviour from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy." And a wave came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. [Al-Qur’an 11:43]
- So it (the ship) sailed with them amidst the waves like mountains, and Nuh
(Noah) called out to his son, who had separated himself (apart), "O my son! Embark with us and be not with the disbelievers." The son replied: "I will betake myself to a mountain, it will save me from the water." Nuh
(Noah) said: "This day there is no saviour from the Decree of Allah except him on whom He has mercy." And a wave came in between them, so he (the son) was among the drowned. [Al-Qur’an 11:42-43]
- Allah sets forth an example for those who disbelieve, the wife of Nuh
(Noah) and the wife of Lout (Lot). They were under two of our righteous slaves, but they both betrayed their (husbands by rejecting their doctrine) so they [Nuh
(Noah) and Lout (Lot)] benefited them (their respective wives) not, against Allah, and it was said: "Enter the Fire along with those who enter!" [Al-Qur’an 66:10]
- And Nuh
(Noah) called upon his Lord and said, "O my Lord! Verily, my son is of my family! And certainly, Your Promise is true, and You are the Most Just of the judges."He said: "O Nuh
(Noah)! Surely, he is not of your family; verily, his work is unrighteous, so ask not of Me that of which you have no knowledge! I admonish you, lest you be one of the ignorants." [Al-Qur’an 11:45-46]
- But they belied him, so We saved him and those along with him in the ship, and We drowned those who belied Our Signs. They were indeed a blind people. [Al-Qur’an 7:64]
- They denied him, but We delivered him, and those with him in the ship, and We made them generations replacing one after another, while We drowned those who belied Our Ayat (proofs, evidences, lessons, signs, revelations, etc.). Then see what was the end of those who were warned. [Al-Qur’an 10:73]
- And it was said: "O earth! Swallow up your water, and O sky! Withhold (your rain)." And the water was diminished (made to subside) and the Decree (of Allah) was fulfilled (i.e. the destruction of the people of Nuh
(Noah). And it (the ship) rested on Mount Judi, and it was said: "Away with the people who are Zalimun (polytheists and wrong-doing)!" [Al-Qur’an 11:44]
